The Beauty of Making Mistakes and Even Failing

Stew smith

We All Make Mistakes, Fail, and Quit...
We Are Human - Now What?

When things do not turn out as planned, you have several choices: you can quit and move on to something else, find another path, try harder next time, or be better prepared. Finding a new way to a different outcome is the growth in failing and if you truly consider all that we as humans mess up each day, these are learning experiences - nothing more, nothing less. Take ownership of failures and keep moving forward, but this time, you are now smarter because of your failure.

There is Growth in Failing

Ask Thomas Edison if you ever failed. In fact, the following section was motivated by Edison's take on his many "failures." Here are some choices for you when (not if) you make mistakes, fail, and even quit:

Quitting and Moving Onto Something Else - This option is fine, as many find their first choice not as fulfilling as they thought it would be. Whether it is a sport you played for years and want to try something new or a career plan that has changed 3-4 times by the time you are 30. Don't sweat it. Take any lessons learned into the next challenge, grow from the journey, and find what truly resonates with you. As Thomas Edison said, “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” The Moment of Truth - When the Will is Tested.

Find Another Way - Whatever the challenge, if something does not work for you and you fail to meet the standards or finish what you started, look for another way to get there. From changing colleges and jobs or working smarter to achieving the same goal still burning inside you, you may need a different route to get to where you want to go.  As Thomas Edison said, "There's a better way to do it - Find it." The Journey Has Many Paths to the Same Destination.

Work Harder - Failing to meet the standards may simply require you to work harder. Take your schooling/training seriously and re-focus on the outcome you seek. Many dreams are lost due to a lack of serious effort and not allowing distractions of life to deter you from your goal. Thomas Edison said, “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” We can always work harder. Common Distractions to Many

Be Better Prepared -  Whether it is academic, physical, or work experience that better prepares us for the challenges ahead, have patience and grow with the process. Some things take time to see improvement. Some things take 1000 steps to be ready. As Thomas Edison said, “I didn't fail 1000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1000 steps.” Train Smarter and Harder

Just Get Tougher - Sometimes there is no time to get stronger, faster, or smarter and all you can do is just get tougher. How badly you want something will have one or many of these gut checks along the way. Be ready to get tougher. When there is no time to get stronger or faster...

Make no excuses. Own it and keep moving forward smarter and better after having failed. Failures and mistakes are neither if you correct the error and move on with the learning experience of having tried. Now, keep trying.

Where to Find More Information About Optimal Performance Training Programs

When you start training again, consider the seasonal tactical fitness model.  I call it A WAY to train and obviously not the only way to train. But it offers the opportunity to never neglect your weaknesses, helps with flexibility and mobility, but will also put you at a level of physical abilities where you are happy with your overall ability to do just about anything. We have a system where the seasons dictate our training. When it is nicer outside, we tend to run and do more calisthenics. When it is colder and not so nice, we lift more, run less, and still maintain our outdoor activities with shorter runs and rucks. Check it out: Seasonal Tactical Fitness Periodization System.
