Accountability is True Self-Assessment
Coaching Matters
Father Hoog: One of Many Mentors and Coaches
I have had over the years...
There are weeks that test our resolve, challenge our routines, and make us question our commitment to our own goals. Recently, I found myself in the midst of one of those weeks—a week where the wheels seemed to come off the tracks, and my best intentions were eclipsed by unforeseen disruptions.
My business coach, whom I value for their role in keeping me accountable in marketing and strategy, was expecting our usual weekly call. But as the time drew near, I could feel resistance rising within me. The thought occurred: “Maybe I should just skip this week. I haven’t made the progress I promised. Wouldn’t it be easier to just avoid the uncomfortable conversation altogether?”
The urge to bow out was strong. My schedule had been scattered, my focus divided, and the productivity I usually count on seemed to evaporate in the noise. I hadn’t executed my plans the way I’d planned and discussed last week.
But here’s what I remembered, in that pivotal moment: Accountability isn’t about shaming myself for what didn’t get done. It’s not a tool for self-criticism, but a compass for course correction. It’s about pausing, facing reality with honesty, and asking a powerful question: "What does moving forward, better, look like next week?“
With that mindset, I joined my coaching call—even though it was uncomfortable. My coach listened, offered perspective, and helped me reframe the setbacks. Far from leaving me discouraged, the conversation reignited my sense of agency. I left grateful that I hadn’t skipped out on accountability, and reminded once more of its irreplaceable value.
Why Accountability Matters Most When It’s Uncomfortable
Holding myself "accountable" by doing Mobility Day each week. It is an assessment of an element of fitness that is fleeting if you skip it.
True progress rarely happens in a vacuum. External accountability is "the truth” that tests our commitment—not just when things go well, but especially when the going gets tough. It is our assessment. As you know: "If you aren't assessing - you are just guessing."
It’s easy to show up and report victories; it’s much harder (and more important) to show up during setbacks. These moments, though uncomfortable, are where resilience is built and growth happens fastest. I often see it with my own coaching clients with online physical training coaching. It is real easy to skip that feedback email, but hard to acknowledge with straight assessments of your daily progress. But those who succeed, don't skip discussing their issues with me. We figure it out, readjust course, and get back on track.
When I allow myself to be accountable, even on the rough weeks, I create the conditions to rebound more quickly. The process isn’t about perfection, but about learning, adjusting, and protecting the routines and boundaries that set me up for success.
The Lesson: Guarding the Morning for What Matters Most (for me)

You may be the same and just do not know it. I have found through my own errors that if I work out first thing in the morning, it will get done when there is nothing competing for my time. Also, looking back, I realized my productivity and peace hinge on how I handle my mornings. The clarity came sharply: If I don’t focus on the following activities the hours before noon, the day gets away from me:
· Workout – Moving my body to energize and focus my mind.
These workouts also give me ideas to discuss on video / article topics.
· Complete articles, videos, newsletters, social media posts all before noon.
If I allow distractions in before noon, my whole day becomes reactive rather than proactive. All appointments about work or outside of work are made in the afternoon. This week reminded me that protecting my mornings isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for achieving what matters most. When I get these three key components done before noon, I now have the focus to do more administrative jobs that require less creativity.
The Takeaway: External Accountability / Coaching Is Worth It
Ultimately, the discomfort of accountability is a worthwhile price for progress. It forces honesty, prompts reflection, and helps clarify priorities. It is are truest assessment of ourselves. While it’s tempting to avoid scrutiny, holding yourself or allowing others to hold you accountable accelerates the course correction and momentum.
We all doubt ourselves and fail. Learn from these to get stronger.
So, when the next rough week happens, as it inevitably will, I’ll remind myself: Don’t run from accountability. Lean into it, guard the routines that matter, and learn from failures and setbacks. Because the practice of showing up—especially when it’s hard—is what turns intention into real, lasting progress. Also, remember that you are human and make mistakes, have normal issues of life that can get in the way of productivity, and it is ok. The goal here is to be honest with yourself, learn from it, and continue to grow because of a setback – not let the setback derail progress.
