Quitting Has to Be More Painful Than What You Are Enduring

Stew Smith

The Quitting Debate

Quitting is rarely a sudden decision. It builds quietly, moment by moment, when discomfort, doubt, and fatigue begin to outweigh purpose and why you started down this road in the first place. It becomes an internal debate that you have to win. These moments forget all the hard work that you put into just getting to where you are today. That is why one principle matters more than anything else: quitting has to be more painful than what you are enduring. If it is not, the mind will find a way out. Don't make quitting the easier option.

People often ask how they make it through extreme training environments like Navy SEAL training or other high-attrition programs. The assumption is that it is about toughness alone. It is not. It is about preparation, purpose, and building an identity of who you want to be. This is way more powerful than just having a goal. Physical readiness matters, but mental readiness determines whether you stay or go. When your body starts to fail, your reason for being there is what carries you forward.

Knowing your “why” is not optional. It is the foundation. But more importantly, it must be tested. Many people believe their motivation is strong until it is challenged under real pressure. That test does not happen in comfort. It happens in moments like Hell Week or the early phases of selection, where exhaustion strips away history. What remains is the truth: either your reason is strong enough, or it is not.

What Do You Do When Your Will is Tested?

Training environments like these are designed to expose weaknesses immediately. Day one is not about easing in; it is about revealing what you failed to prepare for. Weaknesses will typically be exposed on this day. This is why preparation must be intentional and disciplined. You cannot rely on willpower alone when your whole body is telling you to stop.

The best way to stack the odds in your favor is to train with purpose before you ever arrive. Programs I built at StewSmithFitness.com are designed to prepare both the body and the mind for the demands ahead. They simulate the intensity, develop resilience, and reduce the number of unknowns you will face.

To be a complete tactical athlete ready to get TO and THROUGH and become an active-duty member of any tactical profession, you need to consider the following diagram, as we all start this journey with one or more weaknesses on this chart.

In the end, success in these environments comes down to a simple equation: your reason for continuing must outweigh your desire to quit. If you can build that foundation before you begin, and reinforce it through preparation and daily tests (even when you don't feel like it) you give yourself a real chance to endure what others cannot.

Where to Find More Information About Optimal Performance Training Programs

When you start training again, consider the seasonal tactical fitness model.  I call it A WAY to train, and obviously not the only way to train. But it offers the opportunity to never neglect your weaknesses, helps with flexibility and mobility, but will also put you at a level of physical abilities where you are happy with your overall ability to just about anything. We have a system where the seasons dictate our training. When it is nicer outside, we tend to run and do more calisthenics.  When it is colder and not so nice, we lift more, run, less, and still maintain our outdoor activities with shorter runs and rucks. Check it out: Seasonal Tactical Fitness Periodization System.
