Candidate Prep Plans for Tactical Fitness / Selection Goals

Take a Chance and Build It Yourself or Do a Program with Years of Success

Some of the Dozens of Programs We Have to Choose From

A Candidate Prep Plan is your roadmap to crushing the physical entry tests for any tactical profession. It eliminates the guesswork by establishing individualized priorities based on your exact starting point and the specific demands of your chosen pathway.

The Core Elements of Your Plan - Your readiness depends on a brutally honest assessment of your current situation. A solid prep plan evaluates the following factors to build your daily training structure:

·         Abilities: The gap between your current performance and the actual test requirements.

·         Training History: What your body is accustomed to (and what it isn't).

·         Strengths & Limitations: Identifying what comes naturally and what holds you back. Weaknesses are fitness elements you are new to.

·         Logistics: Your realistically available time per day/week, equipment, and facilities.

·         Recovery Capacity: Your ability to bounce back, eat well, and sleep adequately between intense sessions.

Becoming a Cardio Machine That Can Handle the Weight is Needed
(Endurance with Durability/Strength Foundation)

While The Goals Are the Same, the Roads May be different - Two Spec Ops candidates both wanting to become SEALs preparing for the exact same entry test may need the same training program. But often, depending on the athletic history, you need to focus more on that candidate’s weaknesses. If your running is elite but your push-ups and pull-ups are weak, your daily priorities should look drastically different from a stronger athlete who crushes calisthenics but struggles to pass a timed run. The many combinations of strengths and weaknesses from different athletic histories create endless options for how to train and how to focus on weaknesses while maintaining strengths – even though the result is the same (get TO and THROUGH SEAL training). That is why we double down on weaknesses first and work to maintain strengths through the Seasonal Tactical Fitness Periodization models.

Assess yourself, then rank your weaknesses by how severely they affect your entry test or readiness for a specific selection event (logs/boats, 4-mile run/ruck, water con, etc.) Focus your time and energy on closing the largest performance gaps first, while allocating just enough volume to maintain your existing strengths.

Smart Progression and Continual Adjustment - A common mistake candidates make is training for where they want to be, rather than where they are. Preparation must always begin from your actual current capacity.

·         Start Smart: Factor in the time available before your test and gradually increase the training demand as your physical capacity improves. Running progressions matter most, as overuse injuries can hit new runners quickly.

·         Assess and Adjust: A prep program is a living strategy. As a weakness improves, it requires less emphasis, freeing up time and energy to attack the next liability.

·         Monitor Consistency: Track your performance and recovery daily to ensure your current priorities are producing progress.

Ultimately, a Candidate Prep Plan provides individualized direction. It tells you what needs immediate attention, what needs maintaining, and how your preparation must evolve as you become a highly qualified candidate.

At StewSmithFitness.com, we offer specific Prep Plans and training models that don't let you ignore a weakness. Our Special Ops training programs and Seasonal Tactical Fitness Periodization Models incorporate all elements of fitness.

Where to Find More Information About Optimal Performance Training Programs

When you start training again, consider the seasonal tactical fitness model.  I call it A WAY to train and obviously not the only way to train. But it offers the opportunity to never neglect your weaknesses, improves flexibility and mobility, and puts you at a level of physical ability where you are happy with your overall ability to do just about anything. We have a system where the seasons dictate our training. When it is nicer outside, we tend to run and do more calisthenics.  When it is colder and not so nice, we lift more, run less, and still maintain our outdoor activities with shorter runs and rucks. Check it out: Seasonal Tactical Fitness Periodization System.
