GLP-1 Drugs: Changing Weight Loss, Dining, and Fitness

Stew Smith

GLP-1 drugs have been making headlines as a breakthrough in medical weight loss. Many obese people need these drugs to jumpstart the weight loss process, just to make moving easier again. These drugs offer a logical step for millions who struggle with weight loss. Now, I am neither for nor against these drugs, but seeing the secondary effects of these drugs on both dining and fitness training is something to be prepared for. GLP-1 popularity is rising rapidly, affecting not only individual health journeys but also how people address fitness and eating at home and at restaurants. People are eating less, which is a good thing, but they are also exercising less. As more people turn to GLP-1 medications, businesses and health professionals are adapting to a changing landscape of reduced appetite and fitness training.

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1, which stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone naturally produced in the gut. It helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release and slowing gastric emptying, which can make people feel fuller for longer. GLP-1 drugs, such as semaglutide and liraglutide, mimic this hormone and are commonly prescribed to manage diabetes and aid in weight loss.

GLP-1 Usage for Weight Loss: Statistics and Trends

Over the past few years, GLP-1 drugs have become widely used for their weight loss benefits. According to recent studies, millions of prescriptions for GLP-1 medications were written in the United States in 2025 alone, with usage increasing by over 300% compared to previous years. The trend is especially prevalent among adults seeking medically supervised weight management.

These medications have been shown to help significantly with weight loss (10% to 20%+ of body weight) and can improve cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack, and benefit kidney health. After significant weight loss, you may feel like moving more. This is the hope that people start implementing some type of fitness training: walking, biking, swimming, and resistance training.

By any means possible! This trend needs to reverse!

GLP-1: Get Lifting Program - Make today Day 1 - Not One Day

It is highly recommended to get lifting as soon as you can. These can be walking up stairs, raising dumbbells from the ground to overhead, or doing calisthenics. Just get moving. It does not have to be for long, especially if you are low on energy. Time your carbs so they are eaten before physical activity. You will be amazed at how a short 15-20 minute workout can make a huge difference in how you feel and how you see results, helping you build muscle alongside your weight loss. If you miss out on this resistance training, you could be setting yourself up for muscle and fat loss, leading to yo-yo weight-loss/weight-gain syndrome.

Impact on Restaurants: Changing Dining Habits and Business Adaptations

The surge in GLP-1 use has led to noticeable shifts in dining patterns. Many users report decreased appetite and a preference for smaller portions, leading them to skip going out to eat. This is prompting restaurants to rethink their menu offerings. Some businesses are now developing smaller, nutrient-dense dishes and labeling meals as "GLP-1 friendly" to attract this population of diners. Even frozen meals (TV Dinners) are catering to the smaller meal needs as “GLP-1 Friendly.” This adaptation aims to meet customers’ needs while reducing losses from infrequent restaurant visits, resulting in smaller portions and better food choices - WIN-WIN! Not bad marketing either.

What is GLP-1 Friendly:

  • Nutritional Focus: The main goal is to maximize nutrition in smaller portions, focusing on high protein to maintain muscle mass and high fiber to support digestion. This is something we all should be doing.

  • Marketing & Labeling: While used as a marketing term, GLP-1Friendly generally implies foods that help combat side effects such as constipation and, in extreme cases, intestinal blockages. These include high protein and fiber foods such as:

Lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs, tofu), cooked vegetables (zucchini, carrots, broccoli), and whole grains (quinoa, oats) are considered "friendly". Basically, smaller portions, nutrient-dense, high-protein/moderate-fiber meals focused on satiety, and whole foods will be logical choices.  Nothing wrong with these meal choices for anyone. Examples include grilled chicken or salmon on salads, omelets, and steamed vegetables.

How About Fitness? Do You Need GLP-Friendly Plans? Sure. Basic, beginner-level training focused on movement, mobility, and building strength.

Impact on Fitness Training: Memberships Are Down

The growing reliance on GLP-1 medications for weight loss has also affected fitness memberships and personal training services. Many individuals are canceling gym subscriptions and skipping exercise routines, opting to focus solely on medication and dietary changes. This shift may increase the risk of yo-yo weight syndrome, a pattern of weight loss and regain common among those who attempt dieting without incorporating regular fitness activity. Experts emphasize that combining exercise with nutrition and medication is crucial for sustainable health outcomes and long-term weight management.

Beginner Workouts for GLP-1 Clients: Recommended Exercises

For those new to GLP-1 medications, gentle physical activity is recommended. Walking, swimming, yoga, and light strength training are excellent beginner options. These workouts help boost metabolism, maintain muscle mass, and complement the effects of GLP-1 drugs. Start slow, listen to your body, and gradually increase intensity as fitness improves.

Like it or not, the rise of GLP-1 drugs is reshaping weight loss strategies, restaurant menus, and fitness routines. As more people embrace these medications, both individuals and businesses are adapting to meet new situational needs. With continued innovation and thoughtful approaches to nutrition and exercise, GLP-1 users can achieve lasting health and wellness.

Pros and Cons of GLP-1 Drugs: Benefits and Side-Effects

GLP-1 drugs offer significant benefits, including improved blood sugar control and effective weight loss. However, they can cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and lower energy throughout the day. To limit these effects, users are advised to start with lower doses, eat smaller meals, and stay hydrated. Regular check-ins with healthcare providers help monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed.

    Beginner Fitness Ideas

Everyone starts as a beginner at some point. You can make today Day One! I recommend that situations like these start easily and treat yourself like a beginner. That means starting with the basics of walking/biking and stretching. Then, build a foundation of strength and muscle stamina with calisthenics and dumbbells.
