The Unexpected Link Between Your Health and Your Career Growth—Are You Paying Attention?

Are You Sabotaging Your Success?
Discover How Exercise Can Transform Your Professional Life

I recently was reading about the fictional index fund called the Deadlift ETF. Simply put, the “managers” of this fund selected its holdings based solely on the fact that the CEO lifts heavy weights. It should not surprise you when you see the companies below that they would outperform the market, but the common denominator is the CEO is very physically active:

Amazon, Apple, Blackrock, NVIDIA, Uber, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and Meta are all on the Deadlift ETF that would outperform the S&P by 2.4x in the last 4 years. (TrackinSight). Perhaps, fitness, health, and wellness matter to high achieving individuals and companies?

In today’s fast-paced professional world, it’s easy to push exercising down on your priority list. But what if we told you that a recent study highlights how crucial physical activity is not just for your well-being but also for your professional success? The research assessed physical activity alongside the risks of hospitalization for 25 common health conditions, revealing a powerful message: carving out time for exercise can be a game changer for your health and your career.

You might think you don’t have the time to exercise amid tight deadlines and demanding projects. However, consider this: neglecting your health may lead to serious medical complications and hospital stays. In the words of a memorable Glasbergen cartoon, ask yourself, “What fits your busy schedule better, exercising one hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day?”

The study reveals a stark reality: a sedentary lifestyle increases your risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The good news? You don’t need to spend hours at the gym to reap the benefits. Just 20 minutes of moderate physical activity—think walking—can significantly reduce your risk of hospitalization for many health conditions. You enhance these benefits even further by boosting that to an additional 20 minutes daily with added resistance/strength training too.

Integrate Movement into Your Daily Routine

So, how do you infuse more movement into your busy schedule? Start simple. Dedicate a few minutes daily to walk, then gradually add more intense activities like running, biking, or dancing. Think about ways to boost your daily activity, such as:

- Opting for stairs over elevators.

- Parking further from your destination.

- Taking brisk walks during breaks.

- Incorporating stretching or light exercises throughout the day.

- Do calisthenics, lift dumbbells, use a TRX, and build a home gym.

Every little bit counts. Even short bursts of physical activity can lead to significant health improvements.

Prevent Costs and Inconveniences of Illness

The biggest cost of poor health is time away from life itself. The tangible cost of neglecting your health is significant too. Hospital stays can average around $10,000 in the U.S. That’s not just financially draining; it also consumes precious time that could be spent on personal or professional growth. Staying healthy is not just a matter of well-being; it's an investment in your future success.

Regular exercise helps you sustain a robust lifestyle by mitigating risks related to chronic diseases and maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Focus on the essentials: walking, running, swimming, and cycling. To round out your routine, add strength training exercises using dumbbells or calisthenics.

Before starting any new workout regimen, consult with your physician. Find activities that you enjoy, ensuring your commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Coupled with a balanced diet, regular exercise can significantly lower your risk of chronic conditions, keeping you sharp and focused in your professional endeavors.

The highlighted study's conclusion is clear: increasing physical activity by just 20 minutes a day can lead to significant reductions in hospitalization. The increase health and wellness will become your catalyst to performing better in other areas of your life (work, family, relationships, school, etc). This is not just a matter of health; it’s about enhancing your quality of life and productivity.
