About the Heroes of Tomorrow Program
I have always said that I will miss this group of recruits, who will leave to do great things with their tactical professions after training with me for several months. Soon, a new group shows up and replaces them, but they are all the same people, with the same conversations, same strengths and weaknesses, just different faces. They genuinely give me hope for the future year after year.
Training groups, such as my Heroes of Tomorrow, which I have been coaching for over 25 years, have a unique and inspiring dynamic. Their purpose lies not only in preparing people for the rigors of tactical professions (military, special ops, police, and firefighter/EMT) but also in fostering a mindset of discipline, service, and resilience. Each year, they witness a cycle of departure and arrival, with trained individuals moving on to embark on demanding careers, only to be replaced by eager candidates ready to follow in their footsteps. They see what it takes to navigate high attrition rates that have plagued those who came before them. This removes the “impossibility factor” for the recruits, which is a valuable psychological win; however, they now need to get to work. This constant influx and outflow are not random people. Only those preparing to serve can participate in these workouts, which we conduct outside year-round, regardless of the weather conditions, including rain, snow, or summer heat and humidity. Recruits want to get tougher, learn what they don’t know, and work hard to have no weaknesses when enduring tests and selections like those in Special Ops Programs.
Here are the reasons why fresh faces keep showing up year after year.
The Pull of Service and Purpose
Every generation has people like the recruits who join my workouts each day, who need to start preparing for their future challenges. They have the innate human desire to serve something greater than themselves. Tactical professions represent some of the highest forms of public service. They require discipline, bravery, commitment, and the willingness to sacrifice personal comfort for the sake of societal security. They run toward danger when others are running away. Many individuals are inherently drawn to this sense of purpose. They don’t know why, but they have always wanted to serve since they played soldiers in the backyard as 8-year-olds. They seek roles where their actions directly impact the lives of others, whether by defending their country, safeguarding communities, or rescuing those in peril. It is a calling many of these people have. They find us and they find a community of others like them, and nobody says things like, “Why do you want to join the military – why not get a real job?” We all have heard that one from someone in our lives.
For these aspiring military members, Heroes of Tomorrow acts as a gateway to their calling. Its training regimen is not merely physical; it instills values, consistency, and mental fortitude that align with the ideals of tactical professions. The group provides them with a path to realize their ambition, and this sense of purpose continues to attract new participants every year.
Word-of-Mouth and Community Influence
Heroes of Tomorrow operates not just as a training program but as a vibrant community. It connects individuals who share similar goals and values. Graduates of the program often leave a lasting impression on those around them. Their success stories—whether passing grueling selection tests or excelling in their roles—serve as living proof of the program's efficacy. They come back to visit and answer questions from the “new guys,” helping them realize they are on the right path toward achieving their service goals.
Word of mouth plays a significant role in this dynamic. Friends, family members, local community members, and program alumni's colleagues and siblings frequently observe the transformation of these individuals and feel inspired to pursue the same path. The community effect amplifies as alumni share their experiences, their respect for the training, and the camaraderie they built. In this way, Heroes of Tomorrow perpetuates its growth through the ripple effect of its graduates. I am thankful for people every year who wish to serve in any capacity.
The Challenge Attracts the Best
The training offered by Heroes of Tomorrow is not for the faint-hearted. It is designed to push individuals to their limits, preparing them for professions where failure can have life-and-death consequences. This element of challenge is precisely what makes the program appealing to a certain type of individual who thrives in adversity and is hungry for personal growth.
Many participants are driven by the desire to test their own limits. They find satisfaction in overcoming obstacles, whether physical, mental, or emotional. The training requires discipline and resilience, qualities that resonate deeply with people seeking to develop their full potential. For them, Heroes of Tomorrow is not just a stepping stone to a career; it is a crucible for self-improvement.
Coaches with a Mission
Stew Smith has been a coach for the Heroes of Tomorrow for over 25 years, essentially opening his workouts to others seeking to serve at no cost. We assess strengths, weaknesses, and techniques, and address them using a system that has been effective for candidates for over 25 years. That is what we do. We have enjoyed other coaches over the years, and they are more than coaches; they are mentors who embody the ideals that participants aspire to achieve. Their guidance, encouragement, and personal dedication provide participants with a sense of direction and motivation.

A Structured Path to Success
For many young individuals, the path to tactical professions can be unclear and often too much information to sift through. The Heroes of Tomorrow simplifies this journey by providing a structured system and proven approach to training and preparation. Participants know they are receiving guidance from a program that understands the demands of tactical professions. The clear benchmarks and gradual progression in the training process give newcomers the confidence to join and stay on the course.
Stew Smith Fitness operates the Heroes of Tomorrow program, and, quite frankly, uses it to test, evaluate, and research and develop training systems that work. These tests typically form the basis of articles, books, e-books, and training videos. Its focus on physical fitness, mental toughness, and tactical skills provides all the tools necessary for success. The credibility of such a program is often enough to attract aspiring candidates and convince them to trust the process. What you see in books, videos, and articles has been tested for years on people and we share it with you through those products and coaching options.
Personal Fulfillment Beyond the Profession
The appeal of Heroes of Tomorrow is not limited to the goal of serving in tactical professions. Many participants derive significant personal fulfillment simply from being part of the program. The training fosters teamwork, respect, and camaraderie among participants. These values contribute to a sense of belonging and self-worth that transcends professional aspirations. These members form a social group with one another when they are not training, and lifelong friendships are formed. There is nothing quite like getting pictures from former students from all over the world when they bump into each other on deployments, or make it through Hell Week and other selection programs.
Moreover, the mental and physical disciplines cultivated through training often spill over into other areas of life. Participants find themselves better equipped to handle challenges, make decisions under pressure, and maintain positive relationships. The holistic benefits of the program make it attractive to new participants, even if their ultimate career goals evolve over time.
Meeting Societal Needs
The military and police forces are essential pillars of society, requiring continuous recruitment to meet their operational demands. Programs like Heroes of Tomorrow indirectly contribute to filling this societal need by producing well-prepared candidates. These professions are not only challenging but also subject to rigorous entry standards. The attrition rates for applicants can be high, making preparatory programs like Heroes of Tomorrow vital.
As society evolves and faces new challenges, the need for capable individuals in tactical roles remains constant. This creates a steady demand for training programs that can produce high-caliber professionals, ensuring that Heroes of Tomorrow continues to attract fresh candidates year after year.
A Legacy of Commitment
Finally, Heroes of Tomorrow thrives on its legacy. The program has established a reputation as a reliable and effective training ground for future members in the military and police professions. Each year, it adds to this legacy by producing graduates who excel in their fields and uphold the values of service and discipline.
This legacy inspires both trainers and participants to maintain the highest standards of excellence. As new faces join the program, they become part of a tradition that extends beyond the individual to serve a broader societal purpose. This sense of continuity and shared commitment ensures that Heroes of Tomorrow remains a beacon for aspiring candidates.
The steady influx of new participants to Heroes of Tomorrow is a testament to the program's impact and enduring relevance. By fostering purpose, community, personal growth, and societal contribution, it draws people who are eager to embark on a path of service and challenge. With each passing year, the program not only shapes the lives of its participants but also strengthens the fabric of the tactical professions it supports. This cycle of growth and renewal ensures that Heroes of Tomorrow will continue to thrive and inspire future generations.
